States, on the other hand, they are not as common.  In fact, nearly all figs in the US are grown in California.  The state has the perfect conditions for this unusual fruit – full sun, warm temperatures, and well-draining soil.  The fig-growing season in California ranges from May to November, depending on the species.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen most people think of figs, they picture the dark purple-black Mission figs.  However, there are also Brown Turkey (light purple), Kadota (amber), Sierra (light green), and Tiger (green and yellow striped) varieties.  Each has a unique flavor ranging from rich and “meaty,” to light and citrusy, similar to a raspberry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRegardless of the variety, fresh ripe figs are sweet and nutritious.  In fact, famous Roman scholar Pliny the Elder once said, “Figs are restorative.  They increase the strength of young people, preserve the elderly in better health, and make them look younger with fewer the United States Postal Service honored four species of winter berries on postage stamps:  winterberry, juniper, beautyberry, and soapberry.  The first three are popular winter food sources for many animals.  This includes birds like woodpeckers, quail, robins, waxwings, and catbirds, which normally prefer insects.  When planting winter berries, it is important to identify the shrubs and trees native to your area and choose those.  This reduces the risk of non-native plants out-competing native species.  It will also ensure your berries are equipped to handle your frozen treat brands in the United States is Popsicle.  Responsible for the very first frozen treats on a stick, Popsicle has an interesting backstory…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Popsicle was invented in 1905, near San Francisco by 11-year-old Frank Epperson.  Young Epperson had mixed soda powder and water with a wooden stirring stick and forgotten it outside overnight.  It was an especially cold evening, and when Epperson went out the next morning, he found his drink had frozen solid around the stirring stick.  Rather than waste it, he decided to simply lick the frozen drink off the stick.  He called his accidental discovery an Epsicle ice pop and made more to sell around his neighborhood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1923, Epperson was selling his Epsicles at a local amusement park and received a patent for his invention in 1924.  Not long after, Epperson’s children began calling his invention a “Popsicle,” creating the famous brand name still known today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEpperson faced financial difficulties throughout the 1920s and decided to sell the rights to his invention and company.  The Popsicle brand has gone through several ownership changes, but their goal of sharing delicious frozen treats with America has remained the same.  Today, the Popsicle brand is a household name and continues to sell billions of frozen treats every year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2018 Frozen Treats issues are a nod to these famous ice pops and were also the United States’ first scratch-and-sniff stamps – “evok[ing] a sweet summer industry became a big interstate business, competition among growers increased.  Each sought new and unique advertising gimmicks to beat out their rivals.  They hired skilled lithographers to design and print vibrant crate labels.  Images of bright yellow lemons and vivid red tomatoes popped off the labels, enticing customers and effectively marketing the various brands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore the turn of the century, stone lithography was still widely used.  Artists hand-etched their graphic designs into limestone, applied ink, and then pressed the images onto heavy paper labels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the following century, steel and photo-offset lithography made the process easier and cheaper.  By the end of the 1940s, the crate label mass marketing movement was at its peak.  A lithography company might have employed a hundred artists to keep up with the demand.  But only a decade later, preprinted cardboard boxes replaced wooden shipping crates, making the crate labels obsolete.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany old crate labels still exist in collections and antique shops.  The remaining examples provide a timeline of agricultural marketing over three-quarters of a century.  Today referred to as “agro-lithography,” these images offer a colorful glimpse into the history and changes in American advertising during that time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe art for these stamps was inspired by vintage shipping crate labels, seed packets, and catalogs inspired.  Each stamp in the set was designed and drawn by
